Card values and the goal

Cards two to ten are worth face value, picture cards are ten, and an ace is one or eleven, whichever helps. You and the dealer each get cards. Beat the dealer's total without going over twenty-one, and you win. If you go over, you lose immediately, even if the dealer would have busted later.

A two-card total of twenty-one, an ace with a ten-value card, is blackjack and usually pays more than a regular win. The table card tells you the exact payout.

Your choices

You can hit to take a card, stand to keep your total, double down to double your bet for exactly one more card, or split a pair into two hands. Some tables also allow surrender or insurance.

Quick check: insurance is a side bet against the dealer having blackjack, and it is rarely good value. Most basic-strategy guides recommend declining it. Rules about doubling after splitting and the dealer standing on soft seventeen vary and change the edge a little.

Basic strategy in plain terms

Basic strategy is a table of best moves for each hand against each dealer card. It is mathematically derived, and it reduces the house edge compared with guessing. You can look it up and keep it open on another screen while playing; it is not cheating, but it also does not make you a winner.

Other players at the table do not change your odds, so ignore comments from a seat that 'ruined the shoe'. Pace yourself on live tables too; the same dealer can run many hands an hour.

Money habits for blackjack

Pick a bet that lets you survive a cold run. Doubling and splitting can double or triple your bet on a single hand, so keep your base stake at a level where those moves do not scare you.
